Once the band is through playing, we will turn on the stereo to keep the dancing going. What would you like to hear that would be fun to dance to? No disco allowed!
i expect to hear at least some gesture of a jug band cover of goth music, perhaps depeche mode, cure, the smiths, i would love to hoist butch on my shoulders for covenant's "i'm a happy man" and it could be super touching, i can really picture an awesome jugband version of love will tear us apart (though perhaps thematically a bit awkward, hahaha), young folks by pb&j, north american scum, and of course some hot chip - these are all songs that make me think of you guys because y'all introduced them to me. man, jugband covers of this stuff would be awesome, if it were possible. otherwise, some old crow medicine show is always good.
Seeing as that the King of Pop just kicked the bucket, I think it only fitting that you incorporate a musical tribute into the reception...just think of what a wonderful, heart-warming experience it will be if we all get the opportunity to do the "Thriller dance" together.
definitely Julia Nunes and Ben Folds please! If you want I can provide disks and or digital tunes. truth is I enjoy almost every kind of music and will certainly have fun. In the spirit of blugrass I vote for Dave Grisman "Hot Dawg" and also "Dawg Grass Dawg Jazz" also can provide these if you like. BIG LOVE, Abigail
It's true! Butch! and Megan are getting hitched, and we'd love you to celebrate with us!
WHERE: 4731 North Waterside Drive, Lanexa, VA
WHEN: August 29th, 2009 at 5:30 p.m., with reception immediately afterward.
WHAT: A bluegrass wedding, complete with bluegrass music and great barbecue. Wear comfortable shoes and come ready to dance!
1. Where is Lanexa, Virginia? A: Lanexa, Virginia is a small, rural town in New Kent County, VA, and is situated about 20 minutes west of Williamsburg and 30 minutes east of Richmond. George and Martha Washington were married in New Kent County.
2. That's great about George and Martha, but really -- WHY are you getting married there? A: Lanexa is the home of Hal and Kathy Hoffman, Butch!'s parents. They have graciously agreed to let us use their pasture as the site of our wedding, which means we don't have to rent a hall and therefore have more money to spend on barbecue and beer.
3. Won't it be hot? What should I wear? A: It probably won't be that hot, but it's possible. The wedding will be held in the evening. Evening temperatures in late August in Virginia average in the mid-70's. See our post about attire.
4. Why aren't you registered for gifts? A: We decided not to register for gifts because Megan is joining the Air Force in October. We do not yet know where she will be stationed after she completes her training, which will happen early next year. Because we will likely be moving two or three times within the next six to nine months, we are currently in the process of getting rid of a substantial part of our belongings. We felt it didn't make sense to acquire any more things at the moment.
5. It says on this blog that you're having a bluegrass wedding. What does that mean? A: A bluegrass wedding means a good bluegrass band, lots of beer, some excellent pulled pork, and fun. We chose a bluegrass theme because we want our guests to relax, dance, have fun, and experience Virginia as it should be.
6. Can I wear coveralls and a straw hat to your wedding? A: If you really want to, yes.
7. What else is there to do in Lanexa? A: We will cover this in a separate post, but Lanexa is very close to colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens, both of which entertained Megan as a child. King's Dominion amusement park and Water Country USA are also nearby. Lanexa is also close to the Williamsburg Winery and the New Kent Winery, both of which offer excellent, low-cost tours and tastings. Finally, historic Richmond is only 30 minutes away, and tours of the very beautiful capitol building are free.
8. Are you having bridesmaids or groomsmen? A: To keep the expense and the 'serious' factor of the wedding as low as possible, we opted not to have a wedding party.
9. How did you two meet? A: We both attended Georgetown University Law Center. We graduated last May.
10. Oh God, two lawyers getting married! Your evenings must be as exciting as watching paint dry. A: We get that a lot.
Motown is always fun at weddings. Or maybe some '60s, '70s-era funk and soul music?
